SPIE Celebrates the Problem Solvers: It’s Engineers Week!

SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics

Bellingham, Washington (PRWEB) February 23, 2012

Optical engineering is about solving problems, from the very large ― finding potentially hazardous damage in bridges and buildings, and identifying underground aquifers or oil fields ― to the small and even microscopic ― detecting hidden explosives, and targeting individual cancer cells.

SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics, is joining with other professional societies and organizations around the United States in celebrating National Engineers Week (NEW) 19-25 February, to acknowledge the role engineers play in finding solutions to some of the world’s very challenging problems.

The NEW Foundation and participating organizations are holding events, giving demonstrations, providing mentoring opportunities, and other activities to help raise awareness around the work of engineers. Learn more about the foundation’s website: http://eweek.org.

SPIE members and volunteers including professors and students in optics and photonics programs around the country are active all year in sharing information about the field with their communities, universities, and potential students.

SPIE Student Chapter members, for example, bring optics lessons to community students starting before they reach high school. At the University of Arizona College of Optical Sciences, an outreach course sends graduate and undergraduate students out to schools to do optics demonstrations, and the college hosts demonstrations for UA students as well.

Additional ongoing and recent SPIE-supported programs promoting science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education are:

a national contest in Poland to design optical tools supporting education for partially sighted children
San Francisco Bay Area ASTRO Project to conduct professional development for 60 teachers
Photonics Academy of Wales Summer School
Magic and Power of Optics light show and exhibition for students in Russia
Optics and Photonics workshop for teachers at Delhi Technological University in India
Jeux Photoniques competition for grade-11 students and their teachers from 4 schools in Québec City
Laser Spectacular educational programs at 10 schools in the U.S.
laser workshops for grade-school students in New Zealand
workshop materials for Optics Summer Sizzler program for high school students in Rochester, NY
optics materials for Los Angeles African-American Engineers Science and Technology Awareness Day
providing the SPIE Digital Library at low or no cost for designated countries, primarily in Africa, South and Central America, and Asia, to facilitate research in developing countries with limited resources for science
sponsorship of UNESCO Active Learning in Optics and Photonics (ALOP) workshops for physics teachers in developing countries, with one workshop planned for Tunisia this year and two other locations to be announced
a Visiting Lecturer program, providing speakers who are world-class scientists and engineers in optics and photonics
sponsorship of the Abdus Salam International Centre of Theoretical Physics (ICTP) Winter College activities, presented under the auspices of the Italian government and two United Nations agencies, to foster advanced studies and research in the physical sciences, especially in developing countries.

SPIE also celebrates engineers through profiles in its annual Women in Optics planner, and provides free educational posters and DVDs for middle- through high-school students.

About SPIE:

SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics, was founded in 1955 to advance light-based technologies. Serving more than 225,600 constituents from approximately 150 countries, the Society advances emerging technologies through interdisciplinary information exchange, continuing education, publications, patent precedent, and career and professional growth. SPIE annually organizes and sponsors approximately 25 major technical forums, exhibitions, and education programs in North America, Europe, Asia, and the South Pacific. Free Spirit Publishing Brings Service Learning To the Early Childhood Classroom

Free Spirit Publishing Brings Service Learning To the Early Childhood Classroom

Service Learning in the PreK-3 Classroom

Minneapolis, MN (PRWEB) February 15, 2012

Free Spirit Publishing brings service learning to the primary curriculum with Service Learning in the PreK–3 Classroom: The What, Why, and How-To Guide for Every Teacher (Free Spirit Publishing, $ 39.99), written by early childhood education experts Vickie E. Lake, Ph.D., and Ithel Jones, Ed.D. What is service learning? Service learning is an instructional approach that combines thoughtfully organized community service with experiential student learning in a way that changes and improves both the student and the community. It can be a powerful tool in reaching, teaching, and inspiring young children, and this book presents the background knowledge and skills needed to effectively use service learning in preK and primary classrooms.

Service Learning in the PreK–3 Classroom is based on field trials the authors conducted with over 2,000 students and 215 educators, during a three year grant funding Drs. Lake and Jones to infuse service learning into their early childhood teacher education program at Florida State University. During this time, Lake and Jones realized the need for a resource written to help teachers of preK–grade 3, administrators, and early childhood professionals increase their understanding of service learning and its role in the early childhood classroom.

“The idea that a kindergartner can be actively involved in service learning projects—and understand the impact of their actions on others—is one that often surprises people,” says Jones. “But the fact is, young children can make a big difference in their communities.”

Rich in both theory and practice, the book reflects the tenets of the National Association for the Education of Young Children’s (NAEYC) developmentally appropriate practices (DAP), combining community service with differentiated curriculum-based learning to meet the academic and social needs of young children in meaningful ways. The sample lesson plans in the book are based on tried and tested classroom projects and correlated to national service learning, Head Start, and core content standards. An accompanying CD-ROM offers customizable versions of the book’s dozens of forms and templates for lesson planning, assessment, and more. It also includes a PowerPoint presentation for use in preservice and professional development.

Service Learning in the PreK–3 Classroom provides service learning opportunities that support high academic standards and, at the same time, foster children’s social development by teaching them to be good citizens.

Dimensional Optics

Dimensional Optics® Introduces New Website Navigation for Samsung® and Mitsubishi® 3D Customers

Screenshot of Mitsubishi Shopping Experience

San Luis Obispo, CA (PRWEB) February 16, 2012

The average 3D customer is unaware of what they need to know to make an informed decision about buying 3D Glasses.

Dimensional Optics has built their online shopping experience with the customer in mind; making purchasing 3D glasses as easy as possible. All major 3D TV manufacturers are represented on http://www.DimensionalOptics.com and for each brand, a superior shopping experience is presented.

Samsung® and Mitsubishi®, make shopping for 3D glasses and components challenging due to technology changes within each respective 3D TV product assortment. This can lead customers to purchase the wrong items which are not compatible with their 3D TV’s. Dimensional Optics has simplified the buying process for the customer by asking them the year they bought the television and model number, something the customer is likely familiar with. The new Dimensional Optics navigation will direct the customer to the right components needed for their specific 3D TV.

Samsung® has two different types of technology for Active 3D glasses, Infrared (IR) and Radio Frequency (RF/ Blutooth®). The 2010 “C series” 3D TVs use Infrared and the 2011 “D Series” 3D TVs use a Radio Frequency signal. The Samsung® 3D customer is asked which model year 3D TV they own and are taken to the correct product offering. http://www.dimensionaloptics.com/Samsung.aspx

Mitsubishi® shoppers are in a similar situation. The newest 840 & 740 series 3D televisions have a built in IR emitter, whereas the rest of the Mitsubishi® 3D TV product offering requires an external emitter. Dimensional Optics’ new navigation removes the need of educating the customer on all the nuances that do not concern them and simply asks customers what model 3D TV they own. After the selection has been made, the consumer is taken to a product offering that accurately matches what 3D equipment is required. http://www.dimensionaloptics.com/Mitsubishi.aspx

The goal behind the redesign of the shopping experience is to make shopping for a complicated product like 3D glasses as simple and easy as possible while at the same time highlighting the features and benefits that make Dimensional Optics’ products superior to the competition.

Latest BLS Data Finds Increased Unemployment Rate for Adults Without a Degree; Nearly One Million Americans ?Discouraged? Over Job Prospects

Latest BLS Data Finds Increased Unemployment Rate for Adults Without a Degree; Nearly One Million Americans “Discouraged” Over Job Prospects

Hoboken, NJ (PRWEB) May 16, 2011

New data released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) last week reports that the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for American adults with only a high school diploma and no college was 9.7 percent for April 2011, up from 9.5 percent in March. Additionally, the number of discouraged workers increased seven percent from the month prior, to nearly 1 million (989,000). Lack of school or training is one of the main reasons cited for discouragement. Unemployment is consistently lowest among adults with a Bachelor’s degree or higher; in April 2011 the rate was 4.5 percent. For adults wanting to get their degree and become more competitive in the job market, online education is often a popular option due to the flexibility it offers.

“Demand for online programs continues to grow, with the majority of that interest coming from adults who want to increase their marketability in this economy,” said Carol Aslanian, adult education expert and Senior Vice President of Aslanian Market Research. “In fact, the 2011 eLearners Index found that demand is highest for Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees, such as online MBA and nursing programs. Adults are getting the message loud and clear that if they want to recession-proof their career, they need a degree.”

According to research published last year by the Sloan Consortium, a nonprofit group that tracks the growth of online education, and based on the most recent data available, the online learning sector is growing at a rate significantly higher than the overall higher education student population – 21 percent compared to less than two percent. This is due in large part to more adults seeking higher education online. A 2010 Noel-Levitz study found that 81 percent of online learners are over the age of 25.

“For busy adults who are balancing multiple responsibilities, online classes are attractive because students are able to fit their coursework around their schedule,” continued Aslanian. “The success of our economy depends on more Americans graduating from college, so it is encouraging to see more adults returning to get their degree.”

SIP Forum Announces New SIP Trunking Interoperability Initiative ? SIPconnect Interoperability Testing ? for Support of SIPconnect 1.1 Technical Recommendation

SIP Forum Announces New SIP Trunking Interoperability Initiative – SIPconnect Interoperability Testing – for Support of SIPconnect 1.1 Technical Recommendation

SIP Forum

North Andover, MA (PRWEB) February 01, 2012

The SIP Forum announced today a new technical initiative – SIPconnect-IT – aimed at demonstrating and accelerating vendor and service provider interoperability with the SIPconnect 1.1 Technical Specification, which was ratified by the SIP Forum earlier this year. The initiative will feature a series of testing events designed to provide application developers, equipment vendors and operators from across the telecommunications ecosystem a platform from which to demonstrate and test implementations of this SIP trunking interoperability specification in live, real world scenarios.

CableLabs will host the first SIPconnect-IT testing event, planned for mid-2012 in Louisville, Colorado. To prepare for this testing event, the SIP Forum will hold a SIPconnect-IT Developers Workshop, a planning session for SIP Forum membership and other stakeholders, March 6 and 7, 2012. The workshop will help SIP Forum and CableLabs leadership prepare the test plans and logistical processes required for hosting the first testing event in mid-2012.

For more information about the SIPconnect-IT initiative, please visit the SIP Forum’s SIPconnect-IT webpage at: http://www.sipforum.org/content/view/388/283/.

“The ratification of the SIPconnect 1.1 technical recommendation earlier this year represents a significant step forward for the adoption of a common interoperability specification for seamless, end-to-end interoperability between SIP-enabled IP-PBXs and service provider networks across the globe,” said Marc Robins, SIP Forum President and Managing Director. “SIPconnect-IT represents the next step and is designed to transform these specs into action and to ensure IP applications and infrastructure utilizing the SIPconnect 1.1 guidelines can be implemented in live telecom environments.”

The SIPconnect 1.1 Technical Recommendation, ratified by the SIP Forum Board of Directors in March 2011, provides a framework for direct IP peering between SIP-enabled enterprises and service provider networks, ensuring the interoperability of network elements across the IP environment and providing best-practices guidelines for vendors and service providers as they develop new equipment and IP applications for deployment. It features an array of enhancements from Version 1.0, including more comprehensive guidelines about security and SIP end-point and media endpoint functionality, as well as standards-based support for both static (DNS-based) and registration (SIP REGISTER-based) modes of operation incorporating the newly approved RFC 6140.

SIPconnect 1.1 contributing companies included Acme Packet, AT&T, Avaya, Bandwidth.com, Boeing, Broadsoft, CableLabs, Cablevision, Cbeyond, Cisco, Columbia University, Comcast Cable, Cox Communications, Digium, Encore Software, GENBAND, Global Crossing, Huawei, Ingate Systems, MetaSwitch, Microsoft, NeuStar, Nokia, Nortel, PAETEC, Panasonic, Pbxnsip, Polycom, Radvision, Samsung, Siemens Enterprise Communications, Sonus Networks, Tekelec, Tele2 Nederland, Voxeo, and XO Communications.

For more information about the SIPconnect Technical Recommendation Version 1.1, please visit the SIP Forum’s main SIPconnect webpage at: http://www.sipforum.org/content/view/273/227/
