New Glucose Meter Study Rates Nova Max

New Glucose Meter Study Rates Nova Max® Meters Highest in Accuracy

Waltham, MA (PRWEB) March 06, 2012

A recently published study evaluated the accuracy of 20 different blood glucose meters on samples with abnormal hematocrit levels. The study shows Nova Diabetes Care glucose meters, including Nova Max Plus and Nova Max Link, to be more accurate than other leading brands on samples that have abnormal hematocrit levels ranging from 25-60%.1 The study confirms findings of another study published in November 2011, showing Nova Max Plus to be the most accurate among five other glucose meter brands when testing blood with abnormally low levels of hematocrit.2

Abnormally low levels of hematocrit (medical term: anemia) occur in approximately 25% of people with diabetes and are a leading cause of inaccuracy for most glucose meters. 3,4,5 Most glucose meters assume blood samples have a normal level of hematocrit. If a person’s hematocrit is lower than normal (anemia), glucose readings can be erroneously high, increasing the risk of undetected hypoglycemia or mis-dosing of insulin. Two groups in particular frequently exhibit lower than normal adult hematocrit levels: children and the elderly. Low hematocrit levels are also associated with diabetes complicated by kidney disease, pregnancy or heart disease.6

In this study presented at the February, 2012 Advanced Technologies and Treatment for Diabetes International Meeting, 20 glucose meters were evaluated for hematocrit interference. The comprehensive study incorporated blood samples ranging from 90 to 350 mg/dL glucose and hematocrit levels ranging from 25-60%. Only 7 glucose meters met the investigators criteria for satisfactory hematocrit performance. Four of the seven were glucose meters produced by Nova including Nova Max Plus, Nova Max Link and Nova meters sold internationally under the brands Glucomen LX and GlucoFix Mio.

Latest BLS Data Finds Increased Unemployment Rate for Adults Without a Degree; Nearly One Million Americans ?Discouraged? Over Job Prospects

Latest BLS Data Finds Increased Unemployment Rate for Adults Without a Degree; Nearly One Million Americans “Discouraged” Over Job Prospects

Hoboken, NJ (PRWEB) May 16, 2011

New data released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) last week reports that the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for American adults with only a high school diploma and no college was 9.7 percent for April 2011, up from 9.5 percent in March. Additionally, the number of discouraged workers increased seven percent from the month prior, to nearly 1 million (989,000). Lack of school or training is one of the main reasons cited for discouragement. Unemployment is consistently lowest among adults with a Bachelor’s degree or higher; in April 2011 the rate was 4.5 percent. For adults wanting to get their degree and become more competitive in the job market, online education is often a popular option due to the flexibility it offers.

“Demand for online programs continues to grow, with the majority of that interest coming from adults who want to increase their marketability in this economy,” said Carol Aslanian, adult education expert and Senior Vice President of Aslanian Market Research. “In fact, the 2011 eLearners Index found that demand is highest for Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees, such as online MBA and nursing programs. Adults are getting the message loud and clear that if they want to recession-proof their career, they need a degree.”

According to research published last year by the Sloan Consortium, a nonprofit group that tracks the growth of online education, and based on the most recent data available, the online learning sector is growing at a rate significantly higher than the overall higher education student population – 21 percent compared to less than two percent. This is due in large part to more adults seeking higher education online. A 2010 Noel-Levitz study found that 81 percent of online learners are over the age of 25.

“For busy adults who are balancing multiple responsibilities, online classes are attractive because students are able to fit their coursework around their schedule,” continued Aslanian. “The success of our economy depends on more Americans graduating from college, so it is encouraging to see more adults returning to get their degree.”

Hazelden and IC&RC Join Forces to Provide Online Training and Credentialing for Co-occurring Mental Health and Substance Abuse Treatment

Hazelden and IC&RC Join Forces to Provide Online Training and Credentialing for Co-occurring Mental Health and Substance Abuse Treatment

(PRWEB) January 04, 2012

Only 2% of the 5.6 million adults living with co-occurring substance use and mental health disorders in the United States receive evidence-based integrated care—due in large part to the lack of professional training on this approach (Implementing Dual Diagnosis Services for Clients With Severe Mental Illness, Drake et al., 2001). Focus on Integrated Treatment (FIT), a new interactive online training from Hazelden and IC&RC, fills this void.

Hazelden, the leading addiction and prevention publisher in education, treatment, and behavioral health, and IC&RC (International Certification and Reciprocity Consortium), the world leader in addiction-related credentialing, have joined together to introduce Focus on Integrated Treatment (FIT), the only interactive, online training program designed to help addiction treatment and mental health professionals develop the skills to successfully deliver an integrated treatment plan for clients with co-occurring disorders. Studies show that integrated treatment—the evidence-based practice of addressing a person’s co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders at the same time, in the same setting, with the same clinician—is the most effective service strategy available for those with co-occurring disorders, demonstrating consistent, positive outcomes.

According to Nick Motu, Hazelden’s publisher and vice president of Marketing and Communications, “At Hazelden, we believe lifelong recovery is possible for everyone. To help clients with co-occurring disorders achieve lasting recovery, it’s important that professionals are trained in delivering evidence-based, integrated care. FIT offers the means to give this underserved population the treatment they need and deserve.”

Mary Jo Mather, executive director of IC&RC, echoes this statement, “If our field is going to meet the crying need for integrated treatment, we need more professionals trained in the best practices for co-occurring disorders. IC&RC believes this knowledge needs to be spread throughout the addiction recovery and prevention profession, and we’re excited that a partnership with Hazelden makes that possible.”

About the FIT Program

FIT combines best practices in substance use and mental health therapies. The interventions used throughout each of the online training modules include evidence-based therapies such as cognitive-behavioral therapy, motivational interviewing, and Twelve Step facilitation. What’s more, FIT draws upon the numerous randomized controlled trials testing in the IDDT model into a state-of-the-science treatment approach.

The engaging and interactive training modules include videos of real clients sharing their stories, clinical vignettes, interactive exercises, and expert panel sessions. A quick quiz is offered at the conclusion of each module to check the learner’s understanding of the lesson.

Professionals may choose to complete the entire FIT program, register for either the clinician or the administrator tract, or take courses in specific topic areas including Screening & Assessment, Stagewise Treatment, and Motivational Interviewing. Clinicians completing all of the available modules within FIT can earn up to 52.5 continuing education hours upon successful completion of the entire program.

When combined with clinical hours, FIT provides the tools and training needed to become a Certified Co-occurring Disorders Professional (CCDP) or a Certified Co-occurring Disorders Professional Diplomate (CCDPD) through IC&RC. IC&RC has also approved this training for its internationally recognized Alcohol and Drug Counselor (ADC), Advanced Alcohol and Drug Counselor (ADC), and Clinical Supervisor (CS) credentials. Treatment professionals can also use FIT to renew their current certification or licensure.

New Study Finds Community-Based Screening May Increase Awareness for Head and Neck Cancers Caused by Smoking

New Study Finds Community-Based Screening May Increase Awareness for Head and Neck Cancers Caused by Smoking

Los Angeles, California (PRWEB) December 15, 2011

A new study published in the November 2011 issue of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery finds that a community-based cancer screening program may increase the awareness of the dangers of smoking and reduce the risky habit. Dr. Larian of the CENTER for Advanced Head & Neck Surgery finds great promise in the results of this study. “This study showed evidence that those who are given the knowledge about the dangers smoking imposes on the body are more likely to decrease their smoking habits,” said Dr. Larian.

The study population consisted of 568 adult NASCAR fans at the Atlanta Motor Speedway because they matched the demographic parameters. The participants were screened for symptoms of head and neck cancers by otolaryngologists and oral and maxillofacial surgeons. During the screening the physicians explained common signs and symptoms of head and neck cancers, the risks of tobacco use, and the benefits of quitting smoking with the participants. Six months the study followed up with the participants via a telephone survey. 59% of the participants who had initially been identified as smokers at the screening reported they now smoke fewer cigarettes per day as compared to six months ago, and 15% reported quitting completely. Based on these results, research concluded that there is evidence that cancer screenings can have an impact on smoking cessation, but further research should be conducted.2

Dr. Larian routinely treats patients with head and neck cancers as a result of years of smoking. “Providing patients with education about the dangers of smoking at an earlier age will hopefully help them to quit the hazardous habit. I’m optimistic the findings in this study will prompt more health care officials, including doctors and government-funded programs, to create impactful awareness initiatives to educate patients,” explained Dr. Larian.

Dr. Babak Larian, the Chairman and the Director of the CENTER for Advanced Head & Neck Surgery in Los Angeles, is a highly experienced and reputable, board-certified ear, head and neck surgeon, specializing in ear, nose and throat surgery. Dr. Larian is nationally renowned for his expertise in minimally invasive surgery techniques in the treatment of sinus, thyroid, parathyroid, salivary glands and throat disorders.

Guidebook for Bible study: Bible is Source of Confusion for Many Christians

Guidebook for Bible study: Bible is Source of Confusion for Many Christians

(PRWEB) November 7, 2007

When it comes to Bible study, matters of biblical interpretation and relevance are often among the most divisive and confused issues among Christians today. In an effort to tackle these fields of study head-on, author Tim Scorer, with Marcus Borg has introduced a new program of adult Christian education entitled, ‘Experiencing the Bible Again for the First Time.’ It is the first in the new series, ‘Experience! Faith Formation Curriculum for Adults.’

The program is based on Borg’s bestselling book: ‘Reading the Bible Again for the First Time: Taking the Bible Seriously, but not Literally.’ In his book, Borg said people need a new approach to Christian education and Bible study.

Borg calls this new method “adult theological re-education.” He talks about “Experiencing the Bible Again for the First Time” in this video.

As Marcus Borg explains, “Christian theological re-education needs to be about the big topics: God, Jesus, the Bible, faith, and practice. Common understandings of all of these have become problematic for many thoughtful Christians.”

The Theological Statement for the Experience! Faith Formation Curriculum for Adults Series says of this process, “When we call people together in small groups to participate in the experiential learning processes of this curriculum, we are in effect inviting them to come into the kind of learning community that Jesus gathered around him.”

Marcus Borg is a leading voice of the emerging Christianity. Tim Scorer is a gifted experiential educator and Christian curriculum designer for Christian education. Together they help people to understand, make sense of, and find meaning in the stories and teachings of the Bible.

See the Introduction and Sample Session 1 along with excerpts by Marcus Borg and Tim Scorer explaining the importance of Bible study for congregations large and small by clicking here.

Each Bible study kit contains a Leader’s Guide, the original Borg text, plus 12 Participant Handbooks, 10 posters, and a DVD featuring new video clips of Marcus Borg. Extra 6-packs of Participant Handbooks are available for larger groups. Intended for group use in 10 sessions, the price for the complete Christian education package is $ 175.

Published by CopperHouse, an imprint of Wood Lake Publishing.

The CopperHouse imprint supports the groundswell of interest in a “new” Christianity. This is spirituality deeply rooted in tradition yet fully open to the winds of spirit in our time.
